EcoVillage Green-roofed Bus Shelter <br>Ithaca, NY

EcoVillage at Ithaca is a cohousing community with two 30-home neighborhoods, common houses where residents share many of their meals, organic vegetable and berry farms, and office space for cottage industry. Over 80 percent of the site is green space. Community decisions at EcoVillage, ranging from financial decisions and event planning to responsibility for dish cleanup after shared meals, are made through a consensus process. EcoVillage’s bus shelter makes a green statement at the entrance to the community. Designed and constructed by a diverse group of individuals and organizations, the low-cost structure was an exercise in collaboration and resource conservation. The total cost for the green roof was just $300—the cost of the plant material.
