Juror summary: introduces simple modular pieces of street furniture that can be rearranged for different uses with the worthy and important goal of bringing diverse people together in public space.
The design process deeply impacts society and therefore it must be subject to public deliberation and more transparency about coding and rules that impact technological everyday things. The interaction of space and people happens everyday and there is need for democratic participation in design process. We need to respect all people and their own vision so the design process – bottom-up design – begins with them.
How can this idea help to reduce Long Island’s problems?
When people participate in creating their own in-town spaces, they will feel connection to Long Island, and the town will be alive with interaction. Interaction of people from various backgrounds helps reduce racial problems. If it is possible for people to participate in designing spaces for their own use, the space will be interesting; people will meet their everyday needs there, like for food, clothes, and entertainment.
By meeting people's everyday needs in Long Island instead of NYC, economic prosperity will increase and will:
• Decrease the economic problems of families, like affordable housing, high taxes, etc.
• Create new job opportunities.
